With the fifth key to increased business profits and having more time for your other life priorities, you learned how to let your creativity run wild as you thought outside the box about strategic beliefs and actions that you can take to overcome your mental blocks and live into your new PowerScript reality. You were able to get specific with action steps that would support your new reality and clean up the Mental Pollution. By combining PowerScripts and strategic action steps, you will be able to pick and choose the best options that you generated in the last step when you Thought Outside the Box.
The combination of the two (thought and action) create the sixth and final key to business and life success: Putting One Foot In Front Of the Other. Combining thought and action will have a profound impact, especially when they begin changing your emotional experience.
We are driven by emotions…that’s a whole OTHER course. But suffice it to say that the right combination of thoughts, feelings, and actions are going to propel you toward business and life success. After you decide where you are going to start, you can begin taking action by just putting one foot in front of the other. You might even decide to take all the action steps you generated (but hopefully you won’t try to do them all at once!).
As you prepare to take strategic and decisive actions, BEWARE of common obstacles. Below are some of the most common problems that emerge when people are trying to “just do it” and overcome their inertia. If you are aware of them, or recognize which ones are your “favorites,” then you can avoid falling into the same pattern through awareness and doing something different by just putting one foot in front of the other with your strategic action steps.
FOUR COMMON BARRIERS
Four of the most common reasons that people get stuck in their tracks are:
1) ANALYSIS PARALYSIS
Some people feel like they need a comprehensive plan before they can move forward. Ask me how I know this (!) If this describes you too well, then move outside your comfort zone and begin taking action before you have it all planned out. If you just get started, you will be less likely to fall into “analysis paralysis.” I’m not suggesting that having a plan is inherently bad. I AM suggesting that you spend a relatively small amount of time planning, and then the majority of time implementing. As you implement, you are likely going to modify the plan anyway.
Plus, you might find unexpected opportunities that enable you to skip over several steps. If you are still in planning mode, you might miss those opportunities and eventually get frustrated because you aren’t making more money and you don’t have more free time.
2) MAGNITUDE OVERWHELM
Sometimes, the task feels SO big, that it’s difficult to get going. You might think “Where do I even begin?” or “How can I ever accomplish this?” I’ve experienced this hiking, and you can use the following example as a metaphor for whatever goal you are working on that feels too big.
After hiking up for a couple hours, we came to a clearing with a beautiful view of the valley below. I was taking it all in, feeling grateful and happy, but then I looked up and saw the summit was still incredibly high and seemed so far away from where we stood. I could feel the disappointment. One option was to stay where we were and enjoy the view. Another option was to feel too tired and head back down to our car below. A third option, which we took, was to put one foot in front of the other…noticing the trees, rocks, and flowers along the way; taking a break when we needed to; looking back at the progress we had made; and reminding ourselves of how good it will feel to reach the summit. Many steps later, we reached the summit and could take in the glorious 360 degree view as we laid on the warm rocks, soaking up the sun as our tired bodies rested after the long, but rewarding hike.
When you are overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of your goal, you can use the same strategies I described in the hiking story. Just focus on taking the next step. Notice and appreciate what is around you now. Celebrate the progress you have made so far. Focus on the feelings you will have after you arrive. Take breaks and refuel regularly. Keep going!
3) NOVICE SKILL SET
In some cases, you won’t know HOW to do what you want to do. Or perhaps one of the many steps you need to take is not in your repertoire of skills. Most entrepreneurs by a how-to book and painstakingly spend hours trying to learn the skill that is needed. For example, I needed a website, so I promptly purchased “Creating Web Pages for Dummies.” I spent HOURS trying to create a website, became very frustrated, and because I still had to focus on working in my business, months went by and I still had NO website. I also had “Quickbooks for Dummies!” I am SO happy to say I that I now have a bookkeeper and she is worth every cent. Oh, and I finally hired a web designer!
Don’t fall into this common trap of thinking you have to do it all, or you can’t afford to hire it out. Remember our most valuable, non-renewable resource is our time. After it’s gone, we can’t get it back. It makes much more sense to spend your time doing the work that comes naturally. When you are working from your strengths, it is much easier to complete a task and it doesn’t take very long! For example, the web designer I eventually hired was able to complete the entire website in less than two weeks (working part-time on it). That’s a great example of him working with his strengths and me hiring out my weaknesses.
4) INFERIORITY COMPLEX
Sometimes you won’t feel ready to take action until you feel worthy of shooting for the moon. You might believe you need more experience or credentials before you feel confident enough to present yourself to the business world. You might compare yourself to the gurus in your field, and believe that what you have to offer pales in comparison. Your beliefs about your worth, your skills, and even about wealth may inadvertently spurn away your well-paying clients and attract the customers who want your services at a deep discount. If this is the case, focus on cleaning up your mental pollution while also moving forward and ACTing “as if”– As if you are already that successful businessperson who has unique talents and gifts to share with the world in the form of your products and services.
PUT ONE FOOT IN FRONT OF THE OTHER
This last key to business profits and work-life balance focuses on taking ACTion, which can in some cases involve ACTing (as if in a movie). Remember the analogy of film stars whose rehearsal eventually helps them to transform into their characters. You too can transform into the self who celebrates and acknowledges your gifts and talents. The beauty about this, unlike my film analogy, is that the movie doesn’t end…it just keeps on going! And you can control the ending.
Now that you are aware of the most common barriers to implementation, you can be on the lookout and eliminate them before they take over and cause you to stagnate. Be sure to use a calendar system (electronic or paper) to keep track of your milestone deadlines, to plan your activities using big rocks strategies, and then just follow your calendar’s instructions (!).
THE SIX KEYS IN REVIEW
Now you’ve got it all…the 6 keys to increasing your revenue while STILL having time for family, health, and fun. Here they are again:
1. LOOK IN THE MIRROR, be honest, and take stock of where you are currently.
2. SHOOT FOR THE MOON and describe where you want to be ideally. Think big!
3. BRIDGE THE GAP. Understand the biggest reasons why what you see in the mirror is not your moon. These reasons are going to be your underlying mental pollution.
4. POWERSCRIPT. Rewire your thought patterns so you can clean up the mental pollution and get out of your own way.
5. THINK OUTSIDE OF THE BOX. Think creatively about how to overcome your mental pollution and let your PowerScripts drive your actions to increase profits and life balance.
6. PUT ONE FOOT IN FRONT OF THE OTHER. This has multiple meanings, all aimed to help you implement. It means taking action, and Just Doing It! It also refers to acting “as-if.” It also means acting in a way that is consistent with your PowerScripts.
